School Classification - 
Greater Fort Erie Secondary School competes at the local level in the Niagara Region High School Athletic Association (N.R.H.S.A.A.) specifically in Zone 3, with opportunities to progress onto the Southern Ontario Secondary School Association (SOSSA) Championship and the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) Championship.  Greater Fort Erie is classified as an "AA" school which provides competition for schools in the Niagara region and across the province of Ontario with a school population of more than 501 but less than 950 full time students.

Individual Age Classifications - 
Many activities are subject to age classifications at the N.R.H.S.A.A. (Zone), SOSSA and OFSAA levels.  In order to represent Greater Fort Erie in any inter-school competition/championship co-ordinated by the N.R.H.S.A.A., SOSSA and OFSAA, a student must:

(A.) Be listed as eligible on the N.R.H.S.A.A. eligibility sheet, signed by the principal, the athletic designate of the school, and the head coach.
(B.) Complete the DSBN Permission to Participate Form.
(C.) Meet the age classifications as outlined in the N.R.H.S.A.A. constitution.

Students will be eligible for no more than five (5) consecutive calendar years from the date of entry into grade 9 for all sports.

INDIVIDUAL SPORTS:
Novice - The individual's birth certificate indicates that he/she has not reached his/her 14th birthday by January 1st prior to the start of the school year in which the competition is held.  Note: Students may compete in this category for 1 year only, THEIR GRADE 9 YEAR.

Junior -  The individual's birth certificate indicates that he/she has not reached his/her 15th birthday by January 1st prior to the start of the school year in which the competition is held. 

Senior -  The individual's birth certificate indicates that he/she has not reached his/her 19th birthday by January 1st prior to the start of the school year in which the competition is held. 

TEAM SPORTS:
Junior - The individual's birth certificate indicates that he/she has not reached his/her 16th birthday by August 31st prior to the start of the school year in which the competition is held.

Senior -  The individual's birth certificate indicates that he/she has not reached his/her 16th birthday by August 31st prior to the start of the school year in which the competition is held. 


NOTE:  If you are a transfer student from another high school, you are considered  INELIGIBLE for all varsity athletics until you complete an OFSAA Transfer Application.  This application form can be obtained from the Program Leader of Physical Education, Health & Wellness and it must be returned as soon as possible as this form needs to be completed in a timely manner.


Greater Fort Erie Secondary School also has their own eligibility policy in respect to Extra-Curricular Varsity Athletics - 

To participate EACH STUDENT ATHLETE MUST:

  • Be on time and attending all classes on a regular and consistent basis
  • A student who is absent on the day of a game, for an unacceptable or unexplained reason is deemed INELIGIBLE to play that day
  • Come to all classes prepared to learn (i.e. notebook, textbook, pen, etc.)
  • Work to the best of his/her ability in all classes while maintaining a passing average
  • Attempt to pass all of their classes
  • Follow the general rules of behaviour and good citizenship as outlined in the school's student code of conduct and by each of their classroom teachers
  • Display respect for the facilities and equipment at Greater Fort Erie and other institutions/schools
