Teagan Shaw Recognized for Her Achievements in Athletics

The GFESS Athletic Council has named Grade 9 student Teagan Shaw the October Athlete of the Month, recognizing her dedication and involvement in multiple sports. Shaw participates in athletics both inside and outside of school, including travel volleyball and mixed martial arts (MMA).

Shaw has been playing volleyball for three years as a libero and setter. She has also trained and competed in MMA, specifically kickboxing and jiu-jitsu, for eight years.

One of Shaw's biggest sports highlights was achieving her personal best time at the cross country zones meet and qualifying for SOSSA. She describes herself as a determined, outgoing, hardworking, and competitive athlete.

Shaw looks up to Buffalo Bills running back James Cook, admiring his talent, exciting plays, and dedication to the game. Her love for the Bills is also shared by her family, who rarely miss a game, whether watching at the stadium or at her grandfather's house.

With the cross-country season finished, Shaw is now focused on making the GFESS junior volleyball team and having a successful season with her travel team. After high school, she hopes to attend university and would love to continue playing volleyball at the university level.

Congratulations to Teagan Shaw on being named October’s Female Athlete of the Month!

Logan Mendes Recognized for His Dedication to GFESS Athletics

The GFESS Athletic Council has recognized Grade 10 student Logan Mendes as the October Athlete of the Month. As a member of the Athletic Council himself, Mendes is involved in helping promote athletics throughout the school. He also shows his dedication to sports through his participation on several teams.

This year, Mendes competes on the junior boys volleyball, cross country, and swim teams. He plays outside hitter in volleyball, runs the 5K in cross country, and will compete in the individual medley and 50-metre breaststroke in swimming. Later in the school year, he also plans to participate in track and field, badminton, and ultimate frisbee.

Mendes has been playing volleyball since Grade 8, running cross country since Grade 6, and swimming since Grade 9. One of his favourite memories this year was the invitational cross country meet at Christie's Lake. He especially enjoyed how everyone cheered each other on during the races and even made a new friend with a stink bug on the ride home.

He describes himself as a hard worker and team player who always makes sure to cheer on others, no matter what. Although he doesn't follow professional sports closely, his favourite team is the Canadian men's volleyball team.

Looking beyond high school, Mendes is interested in pursuing a career in geography or science. He also hopes to continue participating in sports after graduation.

Congratulations to Logan Mendes on being named October’s Male Athlete of the Month!
