GFESS Athletic Council Names Frances Strugar September Female Athlete of the Month

The GFESS Athletic Council has named Grade 9 student Frances Strugar the Female Athlete of the Month for September. Recognized for her dedication to sports and willingness to try new things, Strugar participates in both golf and dance.

Frances has been golfing for almost her entire life and has been dancing for 12 years. One of her biggest sports highlights was qualifying for SOSSA during her first year on the GFESS golf team. She describes herself as a hardworking athlete who enjoys trying new things and taking on new challenges.

Strugar looks up to Canadian professional golfer Brooke Henderson because of her success in the sport. She is also a fan of the Buffalo Bills.

Looking ahead, Strugar hopes to try new sports and perform well at upcoming dance competitions. After high school, she plans to attend university to study law while continuing to pursue her passions for golf and dance.

Congratulations to Frances Strugar on being named GFESS's September Female Athlete of the Month.

Austin Dawdy Earns September Male Athlete of the Month

For September, GFESS has recognized grade 10 student Austin Dawdy as the school’s Male Athlete of the Month for his efforts on the football field. Dawdy plays linebacker and long snapper and only began playing football last year, but he has already made some memorable plays.

One of his favourite memories was making a sack against Myer that forced a fumble, which he then recovered. Dawdy describes himself as a resilient and ambitious athlete who is motivated to keep improving. He looks up to former NFL player Lawrence Taylor because of his mental and physical strength, and he cheers for the Buffalo Bills.

Although Dawdy wants to keep learning and building his skills for future football seasons, his plans go beyond sports. After high school, he hopes to explore a career as a first responder. He would also love to continue playing sports after graduation.

Congratulations to Austin Dawdy on earning GFESS’s September Male Athlete of the Month award.
